Arid Land Research Center and the International Platform for Dryland Research and Education participated in the 13th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD/COP13) held from 6 September to 16 September 2017.

Following the first conference in Rome in 1997, UNCCD/COP13 has been held approximately every two years. This year, the conference took place in Ordos, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China, in which a number of officials from the government of contracting parties, international organizations, Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and other relevant organizations.

From Tottori University, Prof. Atsushi Tsunekawa at the Arid Land Research Center participated in the conference as a member of the Japanese government delegates. Furthermore, the University also co-hosted two side events for research presentations and opinion exchanges with government delegates from COP participating countries, experts, officers from international research institutes, and other participants. The first side event focused on Japanese initiatives towards combatting desertification and realising sustainable land management in drylands co-hosted with the Ministry of the Environment and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), while the second side event co-held with an overseas collaborating organisation, Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, CAS (NIEER), was based on the theme of the measures against Aeolian desertification and the realisation of land degradation neutrality.
