The Arid Land Research Center and the International Platform for Dryland Research and Education participated in the 14th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD / COP14) held in New Delhi, India, from September 2 to 13.

The conference has been held every two years since the first conference in Rome in 1997, with many participants from the governments of signatory nations, international organizations, civil society organizations (CSOs), etc.

From the university, Prof. Atsushi Tsunekawa of Arid Land Research Center participated as a member of the government delegation, and researchers from the Arid Land Research Center, the International Platform for Dryland Research and Education, and the International Center for Agriculture Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) that is an overseas partner organization co-sponsored a side event titled “Enhancing Resilience and Livelihoods through Community-based Actions”, where case studies were presented and opinions were exchanged with UNCCD secretariats, experts and other participants from international research institutes, regarding the way to disseminate knowledge and technology in dry land and developing countries.

While ICARDA and the University have deepened their relationship as a partner in dryland research through joint research and student dispatch, the understanding of each other's activities is further enhanced by co-hosting a side event at an international conference like this.

Participation in COP14 this time was a valuable opportunity for the university, which has the only “Arid Land Science” research base in Japan, to further enhance its network with government officials and overseas research institutions, and to improve its international presence.
